Audacious, different, bold and brilliant! Joker: Folie a Deux is a punchline five years in the making,
and boy is it worth the wait, writes BRIAN VINER

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of
Joker at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of a morning screening, dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by
the movie we'd just been shown.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of Joker at
the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of a morning screening,
dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we'd just
    been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel,
Joker: Folie a Deux The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix
once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga
as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as
electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, to show that since
the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City.
There has even been a TV movie about him.

Joaquin Phoenix is once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would
    undervalue her wonderful performance

The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same

Joker: Folie a Deux is released on October 4, 2024 and will premiere at the 81st
    annual Venice Film Festival

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether
he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for
murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one
of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds
him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker's girlfriend
Harley Quinn. The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten,
but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime', not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original
into schizophrenia and other types of mental illness.

It's been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It's not, but music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee's burgeoning love for one another.
It is while watching Vincente Minnelli's 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims
to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape,
yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with
our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds
us by wheeling off in another direction.

The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her interpretation of lovely old Burt Bacharach and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There
are also a couple of swooning dance routines
that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling
and Emma Stone in La La Land.

Eventually, after Arthur's high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it
is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.

Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it is Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants
    him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe
    think again

All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix
especially, in a role for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too.

We've known since A Star is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They'd have loved her at St Trinians.

As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just
another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again.

This might not quite be in the top rank of films about mental illness, alongside all-time greats such as Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
But it's not too far off.

Joker: Folie a Deux opens in the UK on October 4, 2024.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and
integrity is at the heart of their reason for
entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed
electoral reforms that the major parties look
set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of
an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election - actually less than the major
    parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity
while using their cash to influence election outcomes - and the extent to
which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures
of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made - but you only find
out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were 'running scared' with the
policy and warned the reform would 'not stop the rot'

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning
shot - saying if it serves only the major parties 'it's a rort, not reform'. Teal independent
ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: 'What seems to be
    happening is a major-party stitch-up'

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000
under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.

And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a 'stitch-up', 'outrageous' and 'a rort, not a reform'.

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor's proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this
    column.

Because I had assumed - incorrectly - that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or
the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united
crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out
major political donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and
Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls
to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam
Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes
of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations
from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed,
these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
    of political donations.

The Labor government isn't even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won't be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to
    catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes
    before preparing for them.

Don't get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition.
I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should - because it certainly isn't beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create
loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get
these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is
    being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile
that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false
commentary about being in politics to 'clean things
    up'.

Early reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux suggest a blend of 'brilliance' and 'boredom', leading
to a mixed bag of reviews.

The film sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar-winning
portrayal of Arthur Fleck/Joker and the addition of pop powerhouse Lady Gaga as
    Joker's love interest Harley Quinn.

Premiering to a full house at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday,
the eagerly awaited sequel to Todd Phillips'
    billion-dollar hit divided critics.

While some found it 'superior' to the acclaimed 2019 film and
lauded the performances of both Phoenix and Gaga,
others slammed Joker: Folie à Deux as 'derivative' and devoid of
    'fun.'

DailyMail's Brian Viner called the movie musical 'audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.'

Owen Gleiberman appeared a bit less impressed in his review for
Variety, writing that the 'cracked jukebox musical'
had an audacious concept, 'but in a basic way it's an overly cautious sequel.'

IndieWire's David Ehrlich took a bit of a harsher tone, saying the 138-minute flick is 'boring, flat, and a criminal waste of Lady Gaga,' adding
    it feels 'bad on purpose.'

He added: 'Phillips has created a corporate pop spectacle that all but demands to be seen as something else.

'Here is a movie that perversely denies audiences everything they've been conditioned to want from it; gently at first,
and then later with the unmistakable hostility of a knife to the gut.

'And that, more than anything else, is why Folie à Deux adopts the form of a classic musical:
Because no other genre makes it so easy to appreciate all the
    fun you're not having.'

In contrast, Alex Harrison of ScreenRant describes Joker:
Folie à Deux as a more refined sequel designed to provoke fans of the original film.

'Joker: Folie à Deux has more coherent things
to say about fan culture than it or its predecessor does about mental illness, which, for me, makes
it the superior of the two,' he stated.

Deadline's Pete Hammond praises the film as 'brilliant' and
lauds the performances of the leads.

'Phoenix knows this character inside and out, and in what others might say is a risky
proposition, he tap dances, sings and sells this role like no
other — if not topping his Oscar-winning turn in Joker, at least finding a way to take him in different, wholly surprising direction.

'Gaga is smartly low-key, not the Harley Quinn we associate with Margot Robbie, but
her own person, dressed down and believably showing
affection and connection with Joker and, more important, the man behind
    the makeup.'

The Hollywood Reporter says Joker: Folie à Deux feels
'narratively a little thin and at times dull… This sequel is built on more
of a conceit than a solid story foundation.'

'Even more than its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux reduces the archvillain to a hollowed-out
product of childhood trauma and mental illness.

Which means there's little we didn't learn last time,' added the outlet's David Rooney.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw wrote, 'There's a great supporting cast and a barnstorming first act but
Todd Phillips's much-hyped Gotham sequel proves claustrophobic and repetitive.'

The Times called it a 'messy, lifeless sequel' that
    'didn't need to exist.'

'The director Todd Phillips said there would be no follow-up to the original, but he changed his mind and the result
is a derivative musical,' the outlet's Kevin Maher wrote.

Allison Willmore at Vulture panned the movie, writing, 'Mostly, Arthur is acted upon, even when he thinks
he's seizing control — a punching bag for the world and, more importantly, for the director, who subjects
the character to so many indignities that he actually stops being pitiable and
starts resembling the punchline to a very long, shaggy joke.

'By the end of Joker: Folie à Deux, that joke feels like it's on us.'

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.

It is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019's Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more
than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the
highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The second installment finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at
Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker.

'While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him,' a press release shared.
